Coffin in Bacolod City Placed Atop of Kolong-Kolong to Keep It Safe From Floodwaters During Tropical Depression Verbena

A family in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental, placed the coffin of their relative on kolong-kolong to keep it safe from floodwaters.

Last Tuesday (November 25, 2025), the devastation of Tropical Depression Verbena caused water levels in their neighborhood to rise quickly.

According to Bayan Patroller Rogin Morales, their family grew anxious when they noticed that the flood was slowly reaching the area where the coffin of his uncle was placed. Fearing that the waters would continue to rise, they had no choice but to find a safer spot to protect their loved one’s remains.

Thankfully, a kind neighbor offered the use of a kolong-kolong, a small improvised vehicle often used for transport in rural communities. The family carefully placed the coffin on top of it, keeping it elevated and away from the flood.

For nearly five hour, from around 8 a.m. until past 1 p.m., the coffin remained on the kolong-kolong while the floodwaters refused to subside.

Once the water level finally went down, the family moved the coffin back in front of their home to continue the wake in a more proper and peaceful setting. They are preparing to lay their uncle to rest on Sunday, November 30, 2025.

PAGASA’s Tropical Cyclone Bulletin on November 25 noted that Negros Occidental, including Bacolod City, was under Wind Signal No. 1 at that time. The strong rains and persistent flooding affected several communities, with families like Rogin’s doing their best to protect both their homes and their loved ones.

The incident touched many netizens who admired the family’s determination, love, and respect, even in the middle of a difficult situation brought by the storm.
