Former Speaker Martin Romualdez Issues Statement amid the Flood Control Mess in PH

MARTIN ROMUALDEZ – The former House Speaker asserted that his “conscience remains clear” amid the allegations of corruption against him.

Several congressmen and senators were implicated into the supposed multi-billion flood control corruption in the Philippines. One of them is former Speaker Romualdez who resigned from the top post in the House of Representative amid the issues.

During a Senate flood control hearing, contractor couple Pacifico “Curlee” Discaya and Cezarah “Sarah” Discaya claimed that Romualdez allegedly received kickback from the flood control projects awarded to their construction companies. They also tagged several other congressmen including Arjo Atayde, Roman Romulo, Marcy Teodoro, as well as then-Ako Bicol Partylist Representative Zaldy Co.

Amid the flood control accusations, presidential cousin and Leyte Cong. Martin Romualdez resigned from being the House Speaker. According to him, he wants the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI) to be able to fully and freely investigate without undue influence.

Former House Speaker Martin Romualdez appeared before the ICI for the flood control investigation and offered his help for the fast resolution of the issue. According to the commission, he denied the accusations against him. He also denied the accusations of Orly Guteza.

Guteza, a former marine, is a former aide of Zaldy Co who testified at the Senate flood control hearing. According to him, he was allegedly part of the group who supposedly delivered millions of money packed in suitcases to Co and Romualdez.

Recently, Zaldy Co tagged Pres. Bongbong Marcos and former House Speaker Martin Romualdez in the corruption issues. According to him, Marcos Jr. and Romualdez allegedly ordered a P100-billion budget insertion in the 2025 national funds.

Amid the allegations of corruption against him, former Speaker Martin Romualdez maintained his innocence. Based on a report of PhilStar, he recently issued a statement that was ready by his lawyer, Ade Fajardo.

“I willingly submitted myself to the ICI’s fact-finding process, appeared voluntarily and remained in the country,” the former House Speaker said.

Furthermore, based on the report, former House Speaker Martin Romualdez also stressed that no credible evidence has allegedly linked him to any anomaly. He stressed his innocence amid the accusations.

“Throughout all these proceedings, no sworn or credible evidence has ever linked me to any irregularity, and again, my conscience remains clear,” Romualdez said.

Recently, Ombudsman Boying Remulla claimed that flood control charges will be filed against former Speaker Martin Romualdez in 6 to 9 months.
