Slater Young Monterrazas Project: Cebu City Will Also Launch Investigation

Cebu City is also investigating the Monterrazas project of Slater Young following the severe flooding.

SLATER YOUNG MONTERRAZAS PROJECT – The Cebu City government will also be conducting its own investigation of the controversial project.

Cebu has just experienced its worst flood triggered by Typhoon Tino, and many people are still reeling from the aftermath. This is the worst they’ve experienced in years, bringing them back to the controversial project of Slater Young – the Monterrazas De Cebu.

Slater Young Monterrazas Project

This project boasts being the first of its kind, finding a balance between indoor-outdoor living and city-mountain living. This project is being undertaken on a mountain slope, but even before it began, environmental concerns had already been raised.

The victims in Cebu blamed the project for the severe flooding, citing that the construction and destruction caused a significant amount of damage, with many of them almost losing their lives because of the floodwater.

The DENR’s statement about Monterraza assured the people that this will be under investigation by various agencies to determine whether or not this has violated regulations.

Adhering to this is the Cebu City government, which will also launch its own investigation of the controversial project. Residents of Barangay Guadalupe and nearby communities at the foot of the mountain blamed the development for intensifying floods during the onslaught of Typhoon Tino.

Mayor Nestor Archival said the City Environment and Natural Resources Office carried out a joint inspection of the project together with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Mines and Geosciences Bureau.

Whatever is reported will be abided by. As of this writing, Young has not yet commented about the renewed buzz. Archival said, “If they find something need to be undertaken, we will push for that.”

Sangguniang Kabataan Council of Barangay Guadalupe also filed a resolution seeking a full investigation into the project, following the unprecedented flooding.

Bayan Central Visayas called for an investigation of flood control projects and potential environmental law violations, demanding accountability.

Jaime Paglinawan, the group’s chairman, said, “We must demand accountability for these man-made disasters brought about by failed projects and the lack of enforcement of environmental laws meant to protect the lives, livelihoods, and properties of our people, as well as preserve our mountains and natural waterways.”
