Typhoon Uwan Rapidly Intensifying, Metro Manila Prepares

Metro Manila braces for potential Super Typhoon Uwan, currently intensifying in the typhoon category.

Typhoon Uwan is now rapidly intensifying inside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), and Metro Manila is preparing for its expected intensity.

The local governments in the National Capital Region (NCR) are now gearing up for the impact of the potential Super Typhoon Uwan. It is expected that the highest tropical cyclone wind signal to be hoisted during its passage is Signal No. 5.

In a previous article, President Bongbong Marcos left a reminder to the public ahead of the super typhoon with over 1,400 kilometers in diameter. He assured that they are on top of the situation and are working with all national agencies, which are now on full alert.

Uwan rapidly intensified over the Philippine Sea in the past 24 hours and will continue to strengthen, according to PAGASA. It is expected to strengthen into a super typhoon on Saturday evening or Sunday, but the weather state bureau is not ruling out “the potential for much faster intensification.”

A super typhoon has maximum sustained winds of 185 km/h or above.

Anticipating the inclement weather due to the coming tropical cyclone, Metro Manila heightened its preparation.

Early Friday night, November 7, the billboards along EDSA were already taken down in preparation for the strong winds expected over the weekend. The Metro Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MMDRRMC) also issued the red disaster alert.

This triggered full-scale response protocols, which included round-the-clock flood control operations, real-time CCTV monitoring, and the immediate deployment of rubber boats, wrecker cranes, payloaders, and buses for evacuation efforts, among others.

Some cities in Metro Manila have already suspended classes and work on Monday, November 10.

To recall, Marcos Jr. previously declared a state of calamity in the entire country after the onslaught of Typhoon Tino and in anticipation of the possible super typhoon.
