Cebu Mother Mourns Husband and Children Swept Away by Typhoon Tino
TYPHOON TINO – In the wake of Typhoon Tino’s destruction, a woman from Liloan, Cebu, is mourning the loss of her entire family, as the deadly floods claimed the lives of her husband, children, and relatives.
A mother from Liloan, Cebu, is mourning the tragic loss of her husband and three young children after floodwaters brought by Typhoon Tino swept away their home. The devastating incident occurred when the Cotcot River overflowed, causing the house they climbed onto for safety to collapse under the force of the raging current.
Krizza Espra, the grieving mother, shared the heartbreaking details of that night. She said they woke up when the water was still low, but within moments it had already risen to their chests. They quickly sought refuge on the roof for safety, but tragedy struck when the neighboring building collapsed, hitting the house they were in and sweeping them away.
The calamity claimed the lives of Espra’s husband and their three children, aged one, three, and eight. Her father and nephew also perished in the flood. To make matters worse, Espra’s mother, aunt, and two nieces remain missing. She said they are still waiting for a crane because the digging is being done manually, and many people are still believed to be buried.
Now left with nothing, Espra is appealing for help in recovering and rebuilding her life. She expressed that they do not know where to begin since they have lost their home and everything they own. She also continues to hope that her mother and cousins will soon be found.
Search and retrieval operations led by the Philippine Air Force continue in a subdivision in Liloan, where thick mud has made rescue efforts difficult. Floodwaters left vehicles stacked atop one another, blocking access for emergency teams. Residents are now hoping that roads will soon be cleared to allow more assistance to reach affected areas.
Meanwhile, some locals have returned to their homes to check on what remains of their belongings and to care for their surviving animals. The community of Liloan continues to grieve as they await help and pray for the missing amid the widespread destruction left by Typhoon Tino.
