Sen. Robin Padilla Clarifies Stand of Duterte Camp on ICC Case of Former President

ROBIN PADILLA – The Senator threw questions for Filipinos regarding the possibility of a house arrest for former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte.

Duterte remains detained under the custody of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, Netherlands since March. The ICC prosecutors filed three (3) counts of murder against the former President as alleged “crimes against humanity”.

Despite his arrest and the transfer of his custody to the ICC in The Hague, former Pres. Rodrigo Duterte previously maintained that everything that he did was allegedly for the Filipino people and the country.

Recently, the Senate voted on a resolution urging the chamber to call for the house arrest of former Pres. Rodrigo Duterte. Senators Robin Padilla, Bong Go, and Bato dela Rosa are among those who voted in favor of Duterte’s house arrest. The Senate resolution was approvd with a 15-3-2 voting outcome.

However, recently, the International Criminal Court issued its decision on the interim release plea of former Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte. The ICC junked the interim release plea of former Pres. Duterte and even supported its claim with Vice Pres. Sara Duterte’s remarks. The foreign court stressed the Duterte family’s supposed criticisms on the arrest and detention of their patriarch.

Recently, Sen. Robin Padilla who is one of those who voted in favor of the Senate calling for the house arrest of former Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte clarified the stand of the Duterte camp. He also threw questions for the Filipino people on the possible house arrest of the former President.

According to Sen. Padilla, none from them whom he described as the people who love and are grateful for the service of former Pres. Duterte said that he should not be held accountable if he committed a mistake. The Senator stressed that the former President himself said that he is ready to face the consequence here in the Philippines if he did something wrong.

In his post, Sen. Robin Padilla stressed that the Philippines has its own court and penitentiary. He also emphasized that some former presidents of the country went into trial and were jailed in the country. He asked why it is different in the case of former Pres. Rodrigo Duterte.

Previously, amid the accusations, Senator Antonio Trillanes denied visiting former Pres. Rodrigo Duterte inside the ICC detention facility.
