Earthquakes are ruthless. They destroy not just buildings and walls. They destroy lives; however, this natural occurrence is unavoidable. They strike without any warning and without discrimination. Anybody can be a victim at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Despite the remarkable technological progress of today’s modern world, no scientist, researcher, inventor, or innovator has yet developed a device capable of accurately predicting when and where the next major earthquake will occur.
In the past weeks, some areas in the country have been struck by strong shaking. The 6.9 magnitude earthquake in Bogo City, Cebu, had left a devastating aftermath. Recently, a 7.6 magnitude quake in Davao Oriental occurred.
This string of shaking had a lot of people worried, and in history, here are some of the strongest quakes that struck the Philippines:
- Panay Earthquake
A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck the Panay Island on June 14, 1990, which caused eight people to die and 41 people to be wounded. Damage was estimated at PHP 30 million. - Mindoro Earthquake
A magnitude 7.1 earthquake hit Mindoro on November 15, 1994, and left PHP 67. 2 million worth of damage. The earthquake and the tsunami combined killed a total of 78 people, injured 430, and damaged or destroyed 7,566 houses in 13 out of 15 municipalities. - Negros Oriental Earthquake
At 11:49 AM on February 6, 2012, a magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck the provinces of Negros and Cebu, as well as the nearby islands in the Western Visayas region. PHP 383 million worth of damage was left behind, and 51 people were dead and 112 were injured. - Bohol Earthquake
A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck Bohol in Central Visayas, but the shaking reached as far as Southern Mindanao. Over 1.2 million people were affected, 222 people died, 976 were injured, and eight people were missing. - Central Luzon Earthquake
A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck Zambales, Pampanga, and nearby provinces on April 22, 2019. The damage was valued at PHP 539 million. The earthquake left 18 people dead, 256 people injured, and three people went missing. - Davao del Sur Earthquake
A magnitude 6.9 earthquake hit Davao del Sur, and the damage was estimated at PHP 4.55 million.
