ABS-CBN superstar Vice Ganda recalls the time when she had to help fund the construction of a school in Sorsogon.

In the ‘Laro Laro Pick’ segment of It’s Showtime, teachers were invited to play as contestants. During the segment, main host Vice Ganda shared striking remarks about the realities faced by educators in the Philippines and the state of the country’s educational system.

The game’s finalist shared the personal struggles she faced as a teacher, which included dealing with floods and having to purchase equipment with her own money just to do her job effectively. She even had to buy materials like a printer out of her own pocket to provide her students with the lessons they needed and to adapt to modern teaching methods.

Vice Ganda, after hearing this, expressed that this problem is rampant. A lot of schools are lacking in learning materials. This point reminded her of the time when he funded a school building in Sorsogon. She did Gandara The Beksplorer and found a school in a miserable situation. There were no books and no learning materials.

“So, ang hiling lang nila sa akin, e, tulungan silang magkaroon ng reading materials kasi wala silang matino, disente, at sapat na reading materials doon sa public school sa Sorsogon. Kaya nag-donate ako ng reading materials at pinagawa ko yung eskwelahan dahil yung eskwalahang iyon talaga, manlulumo ka sa itsura.”

She asked the principal whether they had ever reached out to the government for help. The principal shared that they had done so back when she was still a teacher. However, the request was never addressed—even up until the time she retired. Vice also helped to set up a wifi connection in the said public school.
