PAGASA Releases Latest Update on Tropical Storm Opong

Tropical Storm Opong may cause widespread flooding over parts of Luzon this week, signal no. 1 raised in province of Samar.

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical Astronomical and Services Administration released the latest update about Tropical Storm Opong. The storm will bring rains over parts of the country.

Tropical Storm Opong is expected to bring days of heavy rain that could trigger serious flooding and landslides across parts of Luzon and the Visayas this week.

Tropical Storm Opong

As of Wednesday, the storm’s center was spotted about 815 kilometers east of northeastern Mindanao. It carried maximum sustained winds of 85 kilometers per hour, with gusts reaching up to 105 kilometers per hour.

Weather forecasters said Opong is likely to grow stronger as it stays over the sea. By Friday (September 26, 2025), it may intensify into a typhoon and make landfall over the Bicol Region.

Weather authorities have already raised Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 over Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, and Samar. Under this signal, residents may experience light to moderate winds, which can still pose risks to safety and property.

PAGASA also issued an advisory for southern Luzon and Eastern Visayas, noting that these areas could experience heavy to torrential rainfall.

Residents living near mountainsides and rivers were urged to prepare for possible flash floods and landslides. Fisherfolk and those with small sea vessels were likewise advised to avoid sailing in rough waters.

Authorities reminded the public not to take the storm lightly, as even moderate rain lasting for several days can lead to dangerous situations. Preparedness and caution, especially in flood-prone and landslide-prone areas, are important to ensuring safety.
