Former Physics Teacher Finds Success Through Her Silvanas Business

A former physics teachers becomes a multi-millionaire and a successful entrepreneur through her Silvanas business.

Charish Tanawan, once a dedicated teacher, rediscovered her love for baking when her husband encouraged her to bake a cake for their first child’s birthday.

At first, baking was just a hobby, but life took an unexpected turn in 2010 when their second child was diagnosed with congenital heart disease. Faced with the need to raise over P1.5 million for medical treatment and surgery, Charish and her husband decided to turn baking into a small business.

‘Yung kita namin, tinatabi namin. Tapos pag may bonus kami, tinatabi din namin. So, ang target namin is to have at least 5 cakes, cupcakes, and cookies, customized every week. Maximum na namin ‘yung 10 kasi hindi na namin kaya since we still have a job,” Tanawan said.

The couple spent their free time baking cakes, cupcakes, and cookies every week while still juggling their teaching jobs. Their hard work paid off. The income from their homemade cakes funded their child’s treatment.

The experience opened their eyes to the potential of entrepreneurship. Eventually, Charish decided to retire early from teaching and focus on growing their business full-time. Together, they opened a baking supply store alongside their cake business.

Later, Charish developed her own version of silvanas, a frozen cashew-meringue dessert, which became their signature product. To their surprise, it quickly gained popularity and sold 11,000 boxes in just six months, generating over P1 million in revenue.

The success of their brand, Biba Cakes & Pastries, allowed them to invest in bigger ventures, including a resort and a solar panel cleaning service.

Charish believes that integrity, humility, and teamwork are keys to success in business. She emphasizes the importance of staying grounded even when profits grow and leading employees with respect rather than micromanaging.
