Training Company Suspends K9 Handler Caught Mistreating Service Dog

A K9 handler has been suspended after a video of him roughly handling a service dog went viral on social media.

Previously, the video of a K9 handler mistreating a service dog spread like wildfire online and elicited reactions from the internet users. The video also sparks outrage among animal lovers.

Recently, the Search and Secure Canine Training and Services International Inc. (SAS K9) released a statement and confirmed that the handler admitted his mistake and expressed willingness to undergo corrective measures.

The company issued a formal memorandum of concern and required the handler to explain his actions.

Aside from the suspension, SAS K9 ordered the handler to return to their training facility in Cavite for retraining and reassessment before he can return to work. The dog involved in the incident, a K9 named Bingo, was immediately checked by veterinarians.

The company assured the public that Bingo is safe and unharmed despite the incident. SAS K9 emphasized that their K9s are not just working animals but partners, and that they are committed to their welfare by using positive reinforcement techniques such as toys and rewards during training.

The company also said it is strengthening its handler training protocols and conducting an internal review to make sure similar incidents do not happen again.

Nicole Andrea, who recorded the viral video, said she initially thought the handler was just playing with the dog, but quickly realized it was not play. She attempted to report the matter to Meralco but was not allowed entry.

In a separate statement, Meralco acknowledged the viral incident and assured the public that they are taking the matter very seriously. The public is now watching closely to see how this case will improve animal welfare standards for service dogs.
