Recently, Robert Owen Ganado, a Facebook user, shared his complaint about their thesis being used by their professor without their permission. The post quickly went viral and gained reactions online.
Ganado shared that their undergraduate thesis was submitted to an international journal under the sole name of their professor. According to him, the paper was published without informing the student authors, removing their names entirely.
Robert expressed his disappointment, saying that he and his group spent months conceptualizing, gathering data, and analyzing results, often without sufficient guidance or support.
Ganado explained that they handled most of the workload, even spending their own money to complete the project. Seeing their research published under someone else’s name felt like a betrayal and a disregard for the effort they put in.
The netizen emphasized that proper academic ethics require consent and acknowledgment before publishing any student work. He also revealed that after sharing his experience online, he received a legal threat from the professor, who sent a demand letter for a possible cyberlibel case.
The professor reportedly informed him that the article had been retracted but offered no apology, explanation, or assurance that similar incidents would not happen again.
Ganado urged the university’s Psychology Department and College of Social Sciences and Development to investigate the issue and strengthen their policies to protect student authorship.
The student also reminded fellow students to keep copies of their work and demand proper documentation to avoid similar situations.
He ended his statement by calling for accountability, stressing that students deserve respect for their hard work and should never be erased from research they helped create.
