Group of Students Caught Climbing Metal Barrier and Jaywalking in Iloilo City
A group of students in Iloilo City drew attention after they were caught on camera climbing over a metal barrier and illegally crossing a busy road.
A concerned residents took a video of young jaywalkers along Diversion Road in Mandurriao District. The video even captured the sound of vehicles honking as drivers slowed down to avoid the traffic violators.
The Iloilo City Traffic and Transportation Management Office (TTMO) expressed concern over the clear disregard of the city’s anti-jaywalking ordinance. The local law, Regulation Ordinance No. 2010-370, sets a P50 fine for violators or possible detention of up to one day.
Officials later confirmed that the jaywalkers were students from Jaro National High School. School administrators identified five of them as Grade 7 pupils and one as a Grade 8 student.
“Naalarma tayo, nakita nyo naman na ang traffic natin huminto. Meaning, kung hindi napansin… this is really na dapat ang orientation ipagpatuloy natin,” Iloilo City TTMO Head Uldarico Garbanzos said.
According to the school, the children admitted they were unaware of the rule. One student reportedly rushed to cross the street after receiving a message from his mother, prompting his classmates to follow.
The students, along with their parents, were asked to report to the school’s Guidance Office the following Monday. During the meeting, the risks of crossing outside designated pedestrian lanes were explained.
While no formal disciplinary action was given since the violation happened outside the school premises, teachers used the incident as a chance to emphasize road safety.
The local government is planning to work closely with the school and barangay officials to hold awareness sessions on traffic safety. TTMO also committed to strengthening patrols in areas where jaywalking frequently happens.
