They have taken social media and television by storm, and years ago, from Twitter alone, AlDub stars Maine Mendoza and Alden Richards pulled in 26 million tweets with the hashtag #AlDubEBforLove, which made them a global phenomenon according to Twitter Asia Pacific and Middle East Vice President Rishi Jaitly.
They are an accidental loveteam that redefined Philippine pop culture; however, AlDub was already a decade ago. The love team was formed on the noontime show Eat Bulaga, and AlDub was short for Alden and Yaya Dub. The #AlDubEBTamangPanahon was a record-breaking moment during their Philippine Arena event.
Recently, Maine admitted that she fell in love with the actor during that time. She faced it honestly, and according to her, she also confessed her feelings to him. Despite this, he did not court her. It never happened that he pursued her.
She also remembered asking him, “Ano ba ang nararamdaman mo for me?”; however, his answer back then was, “Hindi ko pwedeng sabihin sa’yo kasi mawawala ang magic.”
Maine admitted that if Alden had pursued her in the past, they would have surely become a real-life couple, as she was in love with him. However, she explained that they’ve already had closure and clarified that they have remained friends.
In this recent interview, Alden’s earlier revelation about his feelings for her was once again highlighted. Richards openly admitted that he had indeed developed feelings for his former on-screen partner.
He expressed, “Hypocrite po ako kung hindi [ko aaminin]. Yes po, ayoko pong sabihing alam niyo, but I did confess.”
Despite the confessions they made, they still did not end up together for real. Maine is now happily married to actor-politician Arjo Atayde.
Meanwhile, Kalyeserye, where their love team was formed accidentally, ended in 2016.
