Senator Tito Sotto On VP Sara Impeachment: “Let’s not dismiss forthwith.”

Senator Risa Hontiveros seconds the stance of Senator Tito Sotto on the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte.

Senator Tito Sotto remarked on Wednesday that the Senate should wait for the Supreme Court’s decision regarding the motion filed by the House.

“Let’s not dismiss forthwith.”

This was the remark made by Senator Tito Sotto as he moved Senator Rodante Marcoleta’s motion to dismiss the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte. This was during the plenary session on Wednesday, where senators discussed the ruling of the Supreme Court regarding the impeachment of the second-in-command.

To recall, the Supreme Court declared the articles vs. VP Sara were unconstitutional, and recently, the high court emphasized that the decision is “immediately executory,” despite the filing of petitions challenging the ruling.

The House of Representatives, on August 4, filed a motion for reconsideration, and according to Sotto, the Senate must wait for the decision of the SC on the motion filed.

“Please let us allow and give chance to Supreme Court to rectify its decision which contains clear and blatant errors for their sake and for the sake of future proceedings,” he said.

He noted that the likelihood of SC reversing its own decision is not impossible.

Senator Risa Hontiveros agreed with Sotto’s remarks and supported his claims to dismiss the motion of the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee chairperson. She expressed, “A tabling of the motion to dismiss by the Senate is not defiance of the Supreme Court. Wala pa nga po kasing final na decision.”

Hontiveros added that she continues to agree and respect the Supreme Court, but abiding doesn’t mean keeping her silence, considering the amount of what is at stake.

She said, “I agree and I continue to respect the Supreme Court… but hindi naman po ibig sabihin ng respeto ay pananahimik lalo na kapag inisip natin kung gaano kalaki ang nakataya rito.”
