Following SC Decision, Senate Expected to Discuss Vice Pres. Sara Duterte’s Impeachment Case Today
SENATE – The senators are set to decide today on the Supreme Court ruling over the impeachment case of Vice President Sara Duterte.
Following the decision of the Supreme Court, Senate Pres. Chiz Escudero previously announced that the senators will decide on the impeachment case of Vice Pres. Sara Duterte on August 6 — which is today. According to the Senate Chief, it will give the senators “ample time” to study the matter.

The Supreme Court declared the articles of impeachment against the Vice President as “unconstitutional”. According to the high court, the impeachment complaint did not follow the one year rule. Four (4) impeachment complaints were filed against Duterte in 2024 in the House of Representatives.
The House maintained the other impeachment complaints were not referred. The lower chamber filed a motion for reconsideration to the Supreme Court over its ruling on Vice Pres. Sara Duterte’s impeachment complaint.

Currently, there are several speculations and doubts on whether or not the impeachment trial will push through. Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada claimed that 19-20 senators are likely to abide by the Supreme Court ruling.

However, a resolution seeking for the impeachment trial of Vice Pres. Sara Duterte also circulated in the Senate. It gained the support of at least four (4) senators:
- Sen. Risa Hontiveros
- Sen. Tito Sotto
- Sen. Bam Aquino
- Sen. Kiko Pangilinan
Previously, Sen. Risa Hontiveros clarified that Sen. Kiko Pangilinan and Sen. Bam Aquino remain her allies despite the two (2) joining the Senate Majority in voting for Senate Pres. Chiz Escudero. Previously, Aquino also maintained that he remains an independent senator.

According to Sen. Risa Hontiveros, she is open for a debate in case any motion for the dismissal of Vice Pres. Sara Duterte’s impeachment trial would be raised during a Senate session. The House previously urged the upper chamber to delay the ruling over the impeachment case of Duterte citing its appeal to the Supreme Court.
However, known Duterte-ally and Sen. Bato dela Rosa stressed that nobody is supreme than the Supreme Court except God. He emphasized that the high court has spoken.
