Davao Mayor Baste Duterte Challenges PNP Chief Nicolas Torre To “Fistfight”
PNP CHIEF – Philippine National Police chief Police General Nicolas Torre III agreed to a “charity boxing match” versus Davao City acting mayor Baste Duterte in Araneta Coliseum.
Torre played a significant role in the arrest of former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte last March 11. Then, he was the chief of the PNP’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Group or the CIDG. His appointment in the national police did not sit well with the Duterte family and the supporters of the former President.

Former Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s youngest son, then Davao Mayor Baste Duterte, claimed that PNP chief Nicolas Torre III’s appointment is allegedly not based on merit but favor. Vice Pres. Sara Duterte has taken swipe against the new chief of the national police several times at the campaign sorties for the 2025 Midterm polls.
Recently, in a episode of his podcast Basta Dabawenyo, Davao City acting mayor Baste Duterte claimed that PNP chief Nicolas Torre III is allegedly just brave if he has a position but he can take him on a “fistfight”.

Recently, the media had a chance to ask PNP chief Nicolas Torre III about the challenge of Davao City acting mayor Baste Duterte to him. Based on a post of ABS-CBN News on social media, the head of the national police accepts the challenge of the son of former Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte.

PNP chief Nicolas Torre III even proposed to make it a “charity boxing match” and the proceeds will go to the victims of typhoon and flood in the country. He wants a 12-round match with Davao City acting mayor Baste Duterte so they can gather a huge fund.
“Tamang-tama marami ang nasalanta ngayon ng bagyo at baha. Maybe we can use this moment or this opportunity for to raise funds in a charity boxing match,” he said.
According to Torre, they can have the boxing match on Sunday at Araneta Coliseum. He wants to have sponsors per match so they will be able to raise a huge amount of money for the victims of typhoon and flood in the country.
When asked how he knew about the remarks of Duterte, the PNP chief claimed that he was informed and he also saw it on social media. He claims that he prefers a boxing match citing that it is easier to prepare.
According to PNP chief Nicolas Torre III, he will be in Araneta Coliseum at 9:00 o’clock on Sunday. When asked about the practice for the match, he stressed that it is fine if Davao City acting mayor Baste Duterte has practiced for it as he will just hit the gym tomorrow.
“Hindi ko naman siya pinapatulan. I just see this as an opportunity para makatulong sa ating mga kababayan kaya nga sigurado maraming sponsors nito. All the proceeds that we will raise, we’ll donate to charity. Ako, I will donate,” he said.
During the interview, Torre claimed that this is nothing personal for him. When asked what if Duterte will back out from the match, the PNP Chief stressed that it was the Davao City acting mayor who issued the challenge.
Previously, following his appointment, national police chief Nicolas Torre III vowed that the police will be trustworthy under his lead.
