LTO Suspends Bus Driver for Playing Online ‘Sugal’ While Driving
A bus driver from Cavite is now facing a 90-day preventive suspension after being caught on video playing an online gambling game while driving.
The Land Transportation Office (LTO) took immediate action after receiving a report from a concerned passenger who noticed the driver’s unusual behavior behind the wheel.
According to the passenger, the driver seemed distracted and constantly focused on his cellphone. After watching closely, the passenger realized that the driver was not just texting or browsing, he was actually playing an online gambling game while driving, with several passengers on board.
The incident happened along the Silang to Dasmariñas route, and the bus was identified as belonging to Kersteen Joyce Transport. The LTO did not take the matter lightly, calling the act irresponsible and dangerous.
LTO Chief Atty. Greg G. Pua, Jr. explained that using a mobile phone for gambling while driving clearly puts passengers’ safety at risk and shows a lack of professionalism and concern.
“Malala na yata ang addiction ng driver na ito sa online gambling to the point na nilagay niya sa alanganin ang kaligtasan ng mga pasahero, hindi po natin ito palalampasin,” Pua said.
The LTO also issued a show cause order to the bus company, demanding an explanation for allowing such a driver to operate one of their units. The company was reminded that failure to respond may lead to further penalties, especially if they are found negligent in monitoring their drivers.
Authorities are serious about holding both drivers and transport operators accountable when it comes to passenger safety. As of now, the driver is suspended and under investigation. The incident emphasizes the importance of staying focused on the road at all times, especially for those who are responsible for many lives.
