49-Year-Old Security Guard Graduates from University of Caloocan City

Julian Avila, a 49-year-old security guard at the University of Caloocan City graduates from the school where he works.

Recently, the Facebook page University of Caloocan City shared the inspiring story of a security personnel who earned his college degree while continuing to work full-time. The post earns admiration from the online community.

For many years, Julian has been a quiet and familiar figure at UCC, dedicated to keeping the campus safe. But behind his calm presence was a long-held dream: to finish college. A devoted father of four, he put his dream on hold to prioritize his family’s needs.

With the help of the City Government of Caloocan and a special program that offers public employees the chance to study while working, Julian found a way to make it happen. He enrolled in the Bachelor of Public Administration through evening classes under the BPA-ECGE program.

Julian continued to serve as a security guard. By night, he sat in classrooms, studying hard despite exhaustion. The road wasn’t easy, but he never lost sight of the diploma he had always wanted.

Now a college graduate, Julian’s story stands as a symbol of patience, commitment, and quiet determination. He came to Manila from the province with nothing but big dreams and is now living proof that those dreams can still come true no matter your age.

He expressed his gratitude to the university’s Board of Regents, led by Hon. Mayor Dale Gonzalo “Along” Malapitan, for giving him and others like him the chance to study and grow.

Whether he continues his studies, seeks a new career, or remains at UCC, Julian’s story reminds us that it’s never too late to pursue what truly matters. His UCC family celebrates with him, proud of his inspiring achievement.
