Sophia Coquilla Case: A Gruesome Tale By Underage Perpetrators

The internet is heartbroken over the case of Sophia Coquilla, who was killed in a brutal way.

SOPHIA COQUILLA CASE – The 19-year-old student was found dead with several stab wounds inflicted by underage suspects.

A 19-year-old University of the Philippines Manila student named Sophia Maria Coquilla was killed and robbed by four people inside their home. This happened in Barangay La Filipina, Tagum City, Davao del Norte, on Wednesday, July 9, and she was on vacation when she was slain.

Davao del Norte Police Provincial Office chief Police Col. Alexander R. Serrano Jr. said the robbery with homicide incident transpired at around 5 AM.

An immediate investigation was launched, and through the information provided by an eyewitness and a reliable informant, two minors were apprehended. However, there are three to four suspects allegedly involved and all of whom are underage.

An Apple laptop, iPad, iPhone, two watches, and other items were stolen, but the biggest one stolen from the crime was her life and her future. The two minor suspects were apprehended inside a boarding house, and the stolen items were recovered from their possession.

When the victim was found dead at dawn on July 9, covered in a blanket, she had multiple bruises and 38 stab wounds in different parts of her body. Seized at the crime scene are objects stained with her blood, such as a grass cutter, a bolo, a dumbbell, and a handkerchief, allegedly used by the suspects when they did the gruesome deed.

The underage perpetrators were turned over to the Women and Children Protection Desk (WCPD) for proper intervention. Republic Act (RA) No. 9344, more commonly known as the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act of 2006, protects minors in conflict with the law, which, as of the moment, is under criticism due to the killing of Coquilla.

The minors who committed the crime are put under rehabilitation and reintegration rather than being punished. Senator Kiko Pangilinan authored the law.
