Toddler Suffers Kidney Damage After Eating Gummy Vitamins Mistaken for Candy
A toddler suffered kidney damage after eating a whole bottle of gummy vitamins, thinking they were candy.
Recently, a three-year-old named Matthew suffered serious kidney damage after eating a whole bottle of gummy vitamins, mistaking them for candies. The incident was shared by his grandmother, Angelica dela Cruz.
According to dela Cruz, Matthew found a bottle of collagen gummies owned by a relative. Since the gummies looked and tasted like candy, he ate all 40 pieces. The next day, his face and body became swollen, so they rushed him to the hospital.

At first, the doctors thought it was just an allergic reaction and gave them medicine for it.
However, after five days, Angelica noticed that Matthew was not having bowel movements and had lost his appetite. His condition worsened, and a follow-up checkup showed that his right kidney was swollen. His urine also turned reddish, which alarmed the doctors.
Matthew had to be admitted to the hospital for more than two weeks. His condition became so serious that doctors considered dialysis, a procedure that filters waste from the blood. Thankfully, he recovered without needing it, but the experience was very difficult for the whole family.
Further investigation revealed that the gummies Matthew ate were not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This means they were not officially checked for safety, especially for children.
The incident reminds parents and guardians to keep all types of medicines, including vitamins, out of children’s reach.
Gummy vitamins may look fun and tasty, but they can be dangerous if taken in large amounts, especially by kids who don’t know the difference between candy and medicine. Always store health products safely and check for FDA approval before use.
