Woman in Bacolod City Dies of Rabies Months After Dog Bite

A 25-year-old woman from Bacolod City passed away from rabies, two months after she was bitten by a dog.

On Sunday (May 25, 2025), a young woman from Bacolod City, Negros Occidental has lost her life due to rabies. Her family only learned about the incident when she was already in critical condition at the hospital.

The female victim, identified only as Nichole, kept the bite to herself. She was bitten on the foot back in March, but she did not seek medical help or receive a rabies vaccine.

“Yung kinagat siya [ng aso] parang binalewala niya, wala din pang gastos dun. Mahirap din sa probinsya kaya siguro binalewala niya din,” Nichole’s mother said.

Last Saturday (May 24, 2025), she started showing symptoms, including confusion, anxiety, and difficulty drinking water. She was taken to the hospital, but her condition quickly worsened, and she died the following day.

A video taken at the hospital showed Nichole visibly distressed. Her body moved uncontrollably, and she could only take small sips of water using a straw, a common symptom of rabies known as hydrophobia.

Her mother shared that Nichole had said she felt like she would drown if she drank too much. Due to the infectious nature of the virus, Nichole’s brother, who cared for her during her hospital stay, was given anti-rabies shots as a precaution.

Nicole’s remains are scheduled to be buried immediately in line with safety protocols. Her mother, who lives in Muntinlupa City, is seeking assistance so she can attend the burial. Her death is the second rabies-related fatality reported in just a week.

Health officials remind the public to take animal bites seriously. Immediate medical attention and complete vaccination are important. Rabies is fatal once symptoms appear, but it is preventable with timely treatment.
