Resigned DepEd Chief Sonny Angara Leads the Department for Upcoming School Opening
SONNY ANGARA – The Department of Education Secretary continues with his work despite the courtesy resignation he filed under the order of President Bongbong Marcos.
Countless Filipinos were shocked when Pres. Bongbong Marcos ordered a courtesy resignation among his Cabinet secretaries but the heads of the different government agencies and departments immediately heed the call of the President. According to Marcos Jr., he wants to recalibrate his administration.

The decision of the President came after the 2025 Election results. According to him, the people have spoken and the government must be aligned with the expectations of the Filipinos. He stressed the need for the government to act so he ordered courtesy resignations among his Cabinet secretaries.
Department of Education chief Sonny Angara immediately resigned from being the DepEd secretary and thanked Pres. Bongbong Marcos for the opportunity to lead the education department. He had a short stint in the department lasting for just around eight (8) months.

Education secretary Sonny Angara succeeded Vice Pres. Sara Duterte in the education helm. Her stint is surrounded by issues regarding the use of the Confidential Funds of the department. Five (5) high-ranking officials of DepEd resigned before Angara assumed office.

Despite filing his courtesy resignation yesterday following the order of Pres. Bongbong Marcos, DepEd Sec. Sonny Angara continues his work as the chief of the education department. Based on a report on GMA News, he stressed that his work continues as the opening of classes is near.
“Tuloy tuloy lang po ang pagtatrabaho ng ating kalihim, full blast ang ating preparations para sa nalalapit na pagbubukas ng bagong school year natin in less than a month,” Dennis Legaspi, the media officer of the DepEd Secretary, said.
Based on the report, DepEd Sec. Sonny Angara is set to join Pres. Bongbong Marcos for the opening of the annual Palarong Pambansa to be held in Laoag, Ilocos Norte on Saturday. According to his media officer, while Malacañang has yet to act on Angara’s courtesy resignation, all the programs of DepEd will continue.
Currently, there is already a long list of Cabinet secretaries who have resigned under Marcos’ courtesy resignation call.
