This is how Lea Salonga supports her child’s decision.
On top of being the world’s Broadway Diva, Lea Salonga is a mother, and her love knows no gender as she fully supports her child doing this.
Tony Award winner Lea Salonga is currently performing on Broadway in the Sondheim revue Old Friends. In an interview with People, she opened up about her 18-year-old child, namely Nic Chien.
Nic was assigned female at birth, but as she got older and discovered herself more, she realized that she wanted a different path. Nic realized that she was transmasculine at 14, and for Lea, what she realized as a mother is “to raise your child the way your child needs to be raised.”
The phase took a while, but in navigating the journey of self-discovery, Lea was there with her unwavering support for her child. As a parent, she wanted her child to feel safe and strong as they conquer the world in their own terms.
According to Nic, the figuring-out phase had a lot of crying, but his parents were “very accepting” which was why he was never fearful in opening up to them. His mother did not want his life to be as hard as it would be.
The transition was “emotional” but also “the most ideal situation” for him. She also said, “You have to meet your kid where they are.”
Lea is married to Chinese businessman Robert Chien, and their relationship went smoothly. They met in 2002 through a friend and got married in 2005. In 2006, they welcomed their only child.
“This is my 18-year-old. My artistic, sensitive, creative, smart, beautiful, affectionate, loving, incredible 18-year-old. I’m beyond blessed and fortunate to call this one mine. Happy Birthday, my babes! Momma loves you to the moon and back!” Lea wrote in a post as she greeted Nic when he turned 18 years old.
