Statement of AFP Asserts Its Sworn Duty to Filipino People
AFP – The Armed Forces of the Philippines issued a statement following Vice President Sara Duterte questioning their “silence” on the arrest of her father.
The arrest of former Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte is surrounded by several issues. There are people who question the legality of the arrest. The Duterte supporters are also calling on the government and the Supreme Court to bring the former President home.

Former Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte is detained in The Hague Penitentiary Institution for more than a week now. He has made his initial appearance before the pre-trial chamber of the ICC last March 15. The confirmation of the charges against him is set on September 23.
Vice Pres. Sara Duterte previously told the Filipinos to move on from Duterte’s arrest. According to her, she is not angry or disappointed as she feels nothing at all. The Vice President said the former Chief Executive could not be returned to the country.

However, at the Senate committee inquiry on the arrest of former Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte led by Senator Imee Marcos, Vice Pres. Sara Duterte expressed a question on the alleged “silence” of the AFP during the arrest of her father. She stressed that a former President was there at the military grounds but they were mum.

Following the statement of Vice Pres. Sara Duterte questioning the alleged “silence” of the AFP during Duterte’s arrest, the Armed Forces of the Philippines released a statement emphasizing their duties.
Based on a report on GMA News, AFP stressed that their role is “to defend the country and uphold stability, not to interfere in political matters”. It stressed that the democratic strength in the country lies in “respecting institutions, following due process, ensuring justice through established legal channels, and selecting executive and legislative officials through elections”.
The AFP also said that governance matters must be resolved through democratic ways that align with the law. It stressed that it stands firm in the service of the Filipino people as it remains committed with the Philippine Constitution.
