In a previous article, the Philippine Embassy in The Hague revealed a call they received from the former president. ICC spokesperson Fadi El Abdallah clarified that Duterte is at the ICC detention center in Scheveningen, and the call was requesting to speak to a consular officer.

Ahead of Duterte’s scheduled appearance before the tribunal, his daughter, Vice President Sara Duterte, arrived at the ICC with former presidential spokesperson Atty. Harry Roque and Senator Robinhood Padilla.

They were spotted at the ICC visitors’ entrance. The VP asked for space to do what they have to do and will accordingly grant an interview later on. The former president is scheduled to have an initial appearance before the Pre-Trial Chamber I at 9 PM (PST).

The 79-year-old Duterte is the first Asian former head of state to go on trial at the ICC. In a previous article, Sara released a statement about his arrest. According to her, he was “being forcibly taken to The Hague” in what amounted to “oppression and persecution”.
