Woman Suddenly Collapses While Walking on Street
A woman unexpectedly collapsed while walking on the street, even though all her medical test results appeared normal.
The woman identified as Sherlyn Ariones was walking with a friend in Barangay San Antonio when she suddenly lost consciousness and fell to the ground. Fortunately, she did not hit her head on the pavement. Her companion quickly called for help, and some men nearby carried her to safety.
According to Sherlyn, this was not the first time she had fainted. She shared that she tends to pass out whenever she experiences extreme exhaustion, stress, or intense emotions.
Concerned about her health, she underwent medical tests, including ECG, EEG, and CT scan. However, all results came back normal.
It was only after consulting a psychologist that she discovered she had Hyperventilation Syndrome (HVS). During the session, the psychologist asked if she had been dealing with stress or personal problems. After performing a few tests, Sherlyn was diagnosed with HVS.
Because of her condition, Ariones can no longer do certain things the way she used to. Even excessive laughter or excitement makes her feel lightheaded, leading to another fainting episode.
Neurologist Dr. Gerald Pagaling explained that hyperventilation causes a rapid loss of carbon dioxide, which affects blood circulation in the brain. This leads to dizziness, chest tightness, numbness, or muscle cramps in the hands and feet.
Aside from anxiety and stress, pregnancy, infections, and heart or lung problems can also trigger HVS. There is no specific cure, but calming medications may help. Doctors also recommend seeing a neurologist or psychiatrist to rule out other possible health conditions.
Sherlyn hopes people become more understanding of those with HVS, as many mistakenly assume they are faking their symptoms. She reminds everyone to be mindful of their words since everyone has their own struggles.
