Anne Curtis Supports Sandy’s Act Filed By Senator Risa Hontiveros

In a post, Anne Curtis backs the Sandy’s Act.

ABS-CBN actress-host Anne Curtis supports the bill filed by Senator Risa Hontiveros as someone who was a victim of jellyfish sting.

In 2014, Anne Curtis was filming scenes for the ABS-CBN fantaserye, “Mars Ravelo’s Dyesebel,” when she was stung by a box jellyfish. This is a poisonous jellyfish, and the sting nearly cost her her life.

It happened in Batangas, and Anne suffered extreme pain from the sting of a jellyfish. Despite the threatening incident, she remained grateful because she was only stung by half a tentacle. She suffered from vomiting in a span of one minute, extreme pain, and delirium, but the venom was not enough to cause her a cardiac arrest.

With this experience, she became vocal in supporting Senate Bill No. 2971, or “Sandy’s Act”. This was filed by Senator Risa Hontiveros.

She expressed in her post, “As someone who went through excruciating pain by a mere brush of the end of 3 tentacles, I can tell you it’s no joke. To see and hear little lives loss to FATAL jellyfish sting is DEVASTATING.”

About Senate Bill No. 2971 or “Sandy’s Act”

The bill was named after six-year-old Sandy Garrovillas. The young girl’s life ended after she was stung by a jellyfish. What was supposed to be a memorable family vacation turned into a nightmare.

Sandy was in and out of the hospital due to health problems and was diagnosed with global developmental delay. Her parents fought hard to give her a longer life only to lose her in a blink.

The tragic incident happened at Ausan Resort, and during the incident, the resort staff was not able to rescue the kid. Due to a lack of equipment and medicine needed, the parents lost their little girl.

At six years old, Sandy was gone.

This alarming rate of injuries and deaths among children in tourism-related activities got Senator Risa Hontiveros worried, hence filing the “Sandy’s Act”. This bill seeks to mandate tourism-related businesses, including resorts, hotels, and water parks, to be fully equipped with emergency medical services.

This is to promote a safer environment for children and prevent avoidable tragedies.
