Ely Buendia On TVJ: “They’re my heroes”

Ely Buendia was once again asked about ‘Spolarium’

Singer-songwriter Ely Buendia reiterated that the Eraserheads song Spolarium is not about the iconic TVJ trio.

The said song was under the Sticker Happy album of the iconic 90s rock band which was released in 1997. Spolarium became controversial because of its lyrics allegedly referring to the controversy that Tito Sotto, Vic Sotto, and Joey de Leon went through involving the late sultry actress Pepsi Paloma.

In an interview back in 2021, Ely Buendia already talked about the song’s meaning. He said that the myth has lived on and it is because many people believed the myth.

However, he said that the song was just mundane and this was born when they were drinking “gintong alak.” “It’s all about getting pissed drunk,” he said back then. About the names “Enteng” and “Joey” mentioned in the song, Ely said at that time that these people were their “roadies.”

In a recent interview for the Eraserheads documentary, based on the article in The Manila Times, the band’s frontman was once again asked about the story behind Spolarium. Ely reiterated that the song has nothing to do with Tito, Vic, and Joey.

He considered the trio as his heroes and he will not do anything to destroy the names of the people he looks up to. Ely also said that Pepsi Paloma has no connection to this song.

“I mean, they were my heroes. I wouldn’t dream of writing a song to tarnish my heroes, so I think that’s most ridiculous. I will maintain until today that it’s not about them, it’s not about Pepsi,” he said.

Meanwhile, the “Eraserheads: Combo on the Run” documentary will be screened in cinemas from March 21 to 23. This is directed by Maria Diane Ventura and shows the iconic band’s legacy. Through this, fans can have behind-the-scenes access to their journey, including the truth about why they disbanded.
