The journalist who gave Sharon Cuneta her moniker “Megastar” dies.
Columnist Ed de Leon died which saddened Sharon Cuneta as he was the columnist who gave her the name “Megastar”.
Veteran actress and singer Sharon Cuneta was only 18 years old when she gained the moniker Megastar. This came with a blessing from her very special friend in the industry, veteran entertainment writer Ed De Leon.
He was the one to give her the name and previously, she shared her sadness over his death. In a recent Instagram post, she shared a tribute to the man she fondly called “kuya”, “protector”, “defender”, and “tireless supporter” ever since she was a teenager.
Her heart is broken and his death feels like an era has ended. She shared, “I wish God would’ve taken him home some other time, not just a few days before Christmas. I will miss you, my dearest Kuya Ed.”
How did the late journalist come up with the name “Megastar” for her?
In a 2022 interview, Ed shared that the name was inspired after he saw how thousands of fans showed up on her wedding day with Gabby Concepcion just to see a glimpse of her, their idol.
The wedding took place in 1984 but the couple got separated in 1987. Their marriage was officially annulled in 1993.
Ed shared, “Pagkatapos ng kasal, naghanap ako sa dictionary ng prefix. Yung mega kasi, prefix na kapag ginamit mo sa noun or anything, it multiplies by ten million. Sabi ko, puwede ang Megastar—a star to ten million people.”
In her post, the Megastar did not forget to thank her late friend for his love, and encouragement for her. He fought for her and believed in her when others caused her hurt.
