FACTS ABOUT PLANETS – Here are some interesting information you may yet to know about the eight (8) planets in the solar system.
Science is a wide field of study. Meanwhile, the topics under this subject are arranged based on the learning capacity of the students as their age indicates. One of the most popular topics is the “Solar System”, the planetary system.
The Solar System has the Sun, eight (8) planets , five (5) dwarf planets, hundreds of moons, and thousands of asteroids. The Solar System is found in the Milky Way and it orbits the center of the galaxy at around 515,000 mph (828,000 kph).
A complete orbit around the galactic center takes around 230 million years. Among the eight (8) planets, the experts are only sure of life on Earth but there is a constant search for the possibility of life in other planets.
What are the eight (8) planets in the Solar System? Here are they as well as the facts about these planets:
1. Mercury
The Mercury is a hot planet as it is the planet that is closest to the Sun but, surprisingly, it has ice on its surfaces. The ice can be found in the permanently shadowed craters of the planet and cannot be reached by the sunlight. This planet is not suitable for life as it is airless.
2. Venus
This is one of the planets in the Solar System with no moon and there is no clear explanation why. This planet having no moon remains a mystery as the most of the other planets have many moons just like Saturn which has 60.
3. Mars
Also one of the facts about planets is that Mars had a thick atmosphere in the past. It is believed to have water in the past thus, there is a thicker temperature but it decreased over time as the energy of the Sun pushed the lighter molecules out of the atmosphere of the planet.
4. Jupiter
The Jupiter is the most massive planet in the Solar System. It has a mass that is 318 times of the Earth thus, there is a huge chance that passing comets and asteroids are caught or diverted.
5. Saturn
Saturn is one of the planets in the Solar System which has rings. The rings are ice and rock debris. A telescopic view of the planet also showed the chain of small bodies encircling Saturn which is a gas giant. It is also believed that a moon tearing apart due to the strong gravity of the planet could be the reason behind the rings.
6. Uranus
Also one of the facts about planets is that Uranus is a stormy planet as revealed by a telescopic view. In 2007, it drew closer to the Sun. However, even the experts could not answer why Uranus is stormy.
7. Neptune
This planet has supersonic winds. NASA’s record had the winds in Neptune at over 1,100 miles per hour under its highest altitudes. It is faster than the speed of the sound on Earth. However, as to the planet being blustery is something that remains a mystery about it.
8. Earth
The Earth has a magnetic field that protects the people from the Sun’s radiation and particles. The flares of the Sun can be dangerous for the people without this magnetic field. That is the reason why NASA monitors the solar activity for the astronauts.
