Coco Martin shared this story from his childhood
Kapamilya actor Coco Martin revealed why he does not celebrate his birthday and this was connected to what happened during his childhood.
Coco is one of the most successful actors of his generation. From doing indie films, he was able to crossover to mainstream and did several hit TV shows and movies. Right now, Coco is not just an actor, he is also a director and a producer.
With all the success he achieved over the years and he also established a new business just recently, Coco’s financial status indeed elevated.
However, despite Coco Martin’s financial stability, he is not fond of organizing a party for his birthday.
In a recent interview on talent manager-vlogger Ogie Diaz’s YouTube channel, the Batang Quiapo actor revealed why he does not celebrate his birthday, every November 1. More than the fact that this is the day Filipinos go to cemeteries because it is considered All Saint’s Day, Coco had a deeper reason why his birthday is just another ordinary day.
This is rooted in a childhood experience. He shared that when he was nine years old, his parents separated. When he and his mother met for the first time again after the separation, she wanted to celebrate his birthday.
Coco shared that his mother cooked and prepared for the party. She invited their relatives and friends but sadly, no one came. This saddened Coco because he felt sorry for his mother.
With this, he said that he sort of had a trauma and he was not happy during his birthday. He did not enjoy parties and he just wanted everything to be finished.
“Naawa ako sa nanay ko, honestly. Nakita ko yung frustration niya. Tapos yung mga pagkain na niluto niya, pinamigay niya sa kapitbahay,” the actor shared.
Coco Martin also shared that he would tell people close to him not to surprise him on his birthday because he would just eat and sleep during that day. He stressed that he is not being “maarte” but that somehow he carried that trauma from his childhood.
When asked what he felt every time a surprise birthday party was held for him, he said that he felt shy about this. “Nahihiya talaga ako, hindi ako sanay,” he said.
The actor added that he is not used to getting attention from the people. He said that this is the reason why every time he would have TV guesting or mall show, he wears shades to hide his eyes. Coco revealed that he is not at ease in front of many people and he would hide his eyes to hide his nervousness also.
