PAGASA Says Issues Signal No. 3 Raised in Sta. Ana, Cagayan as Typhoon Marce Strengthens

Typhoon Marce has intensified further as it moves closer to land prompting PAGASA to raise warnings for over parts of Northern Luzon.

PAGASA said that Typhoon Signal No. 3 is now in effect for Sta. Ana, Cagayan, while Babuyan Islands and nearby areas are preparing for landfall as Marce is expected to pass through the region on Thursday afternoon (November 7) or early Friday morning (November 8).

As of PAGASA’s 11 a.m. bulletin on Wednesday (November 6, 2024), Signal No. 3 covers northeastern Cagayan, specifically Santa Ana. Meanwhile, Signal No. 2 is raised in several areas, including Batanes, Babuyan Islands, and portions of mainland Cagayan, Apayao, and nearby regions.

Signal No. 1 also extends over a wider region, covering parts of Ilocos, Mountain Province, and Benguet, among others, indicating that these areas should prepare for potential heavy rains and strong winds.

Marce was last spotted about 305 kilometers east of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan, moving westward at 10 kilometers per hour. It has maximum sustained winds of up to 150 kph, with gusting of up to 185 kph, and it’s likely to continue strengthening, reaching peak intensity as it approaches the Babuyan Channel.

PAGASA has warned of a “moderate to high risk” of dangerous storm surges, particularly for Batanes, Cagayan, Babuyan Islands, Isabela, Ilocos Norte, and Ilocos Sur. Coastal areas in these provinces might experience storm surges of 2 to 3 meters above normal tide levels.

The typhoon will bring heavy to intense rainfall in Cagayan and moderate to heavy rains in Batanes, Isabela, and Aurora from Wednesday afternoon through Thursday. Possible flooding and landslides are expected in these areas.

Residents in the affected areas are advised to stay alert and be prepared for possible evacuations.

Marce is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by Friday evening.
