107-Year-Old Woman in China Grows Horn on Her Forehead
A 107-year-old woman from China grows a horn on her forehead that some say could be her secret to longevity.
The grandmother known online as “Lola Chen,” explained that her “horn,” now measuring around four inches long, is an unusual skin condition that has drawn fascination and curiosity on social media, especially on the Chinese platform Douyin.
This horn-like growth, known medically as a “cutaneous horn,” is made up of excess keratin, the same protein that forms human hair and nails. Although it looks unusual, experts say that it’s typically harmless and non-cancerous.
Cases like Lola Chen’s are rare and are generally seen in older individuals, especially those aged between 60 and 70. Often, these growths appear on parts of the body frequently exposed to sunlight, as UV exposure can increase keratin production in the skin.
“Cutaneous horns are uncommon, conical-shaped skin protrusions, often keratinized, arising from various underlying lesions,” according to the National Institutes of Health.
The centenarian woman seems to have no intention of removing her horn, and she believes it could even be contributing to her long life. Her unique condition has been known to occur before, in 2019, a 74-year-old man from India grew a similar horn at the top of his head.
Unlike Lola Chen, however, he chose to have it surgically removed, a procedure that doctors successfully completed without complications. Some netizens warned her of the potential consequences of removing the horn.
“My grandma had a growth on her head, she went to the hospital to have it removed but died two days after she came back,” the user said.
As Lola Chen’s story circulates online, people continue to wonder if her unusual “horn” is indeed her good luck charm.
