November 4 Declared as National Day of Mourning for ‘Kristine’ Victims, President Marcos Says
President Marcos has declared November 4, 2024, as a National Day of Mourning for the victims of severe tropical Storm Kristine.
On October 30, 2024, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. signed a formal proclamation expressing condolences and asking all Filipinos to join in remembering those affected by the storm. The proclamation declares November 4, 2024, as a National Day of Mourning.
The decision was made after the storm hit the Philippines from October 21 to 25, 2024, causing major damage and taking many lives.
“The onslaught of Severe Tropical Storm Kristine caused the loss of lives and destruction of property, including immense damage to agriculture and critical infrastructures and lifelines, as well as the disruption of the means of livelihood and the normal way life of the people,” Marcos said.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported that as of November 2, 2024 (Saturday), the storm had tragically claimed at least 146 lives, left 91 people injured, and left many still missing. It also affected over 8.5 million people across the country.
The damage was widespread, affecting homes, farms, and important infrastructure. Because of this, the government is urging everyone to take a moment on November 4 to offer prayers and support for the families who are grieving.
As part of the mourning, flags at all government buildings and embassies will be flown at half-mast to honor the victims. The announcement shows solidarity with those who have lost loved ones and helps remind everyone of the importance of coming together during tough times.
President Marcos is calling on the nation to reflect on the impact of the storm and to stand with the families in their time of sorrow. It’s a day for unity and remembrance as the country faces the aftermath of this tragic event.
