Catriona Gray Wins In Libel Cases; Bulgar Editor, Writer Found Guilty

Bulgar editor and writer found guilty over libel cases filed by Catriona Gray.

Atty. Joji Alonso, lawyer of Catriona Gray, says the filed libel cases against the editor and writer have been resolved after four years.

In 2020, crowned Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray filed a libel complaint versus Bulgar entertainment editor Janice Navida and writer Melba Llanera due to a supposedly “fake” nasty photo published on the tabloid. The camp of Gray strongly denounced the attempt to tarnish her good reputation.

Previously, the editor stressed in a statement that they are not the enemy of the beauty queen and they are actually there as an aid to clear her name. However, the beauty queen pushed through the legal battle.

In 2021, the Bulgar writer and editor were indicted by the city prosecutor of Quezon City.

Four years after the filing, it has been finally resolved with Gray on the winning side. The QC court’s 12-page resolution detailed how the decision was reached. The verdict for the accused was “guilty beyond reasonable doubt” for libel cases and another “guilty beyond reasonable doubt” verdict for Navida due to cyber libel.

According to the Revised Penal Code, they are to face “prision correctional in its minimum to medium periods, or six (6) months and one (1) day to four (4) years and (2) months” for libel and “imprisonment of six (6) months and (1) day of prision correccional as minimum, to five (5) years, five (5) months and eleven (11) days of prision correccional as maximum” for cyber libel.

The resolution also stated, “No pronouncement as to costs.”

In 2020, demanded Php 10 million and a public apology from a tabloid after the publication of the controversial photo that caused “immeasurable” damage to her reputation.
