On Wednesday afternoon (August 7, 2024), five people lost their lives in a collision involving a pickup truck, a mini dump truck, and a motorcycle in Sta. Maria, Davao Occidental.
The accident happened when the pickup truck, coming from the opposite direction, swerved into the lane of the motorcycle and mini dump truck traveling on the national highway in Barangay Basiawan.
The collision caused severe damage, leaving the front of the pickup truck crushed and the mini dump truck barely recognizable. The contents of the mini dump truck, which included bundles of brush, were scattered across the road.
The victims included a teacher who was riding the motorcycle along with a female passenger. The driver and two passengers of the mini dump truck also died in the crash.
According to the Sta. Maria Municipal Police Station, the pickup truck driver was returning to General Santos City from a birthday party when the accident happened. The driver, a former soldier, was hospitalized in Digos City following the incident.
The police have charged the pickup truck driver with reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicides. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to understand all the factors that led to this tragic accident.
