2 Minor Siblings in Basilan Lost Their Lives After Consuming Puffer Fish

TRAGIC INCIDENT – Two minor siblings lost their lives after eating puffer fish, also known locally as “butete” in Basilan.

Pufferfish, also known as “butete” in the Philippines, is a type of fish that is famous for its ability to inflate into a ball-like shape when threatened. They are found in both saltwater and freshwater environments and are considered a delicacy in some parts of the world.

However, puffer fish contain a potent toxin known as tetrodotoxin. This toxin is extremely poisonous and can be fatal if consumed in significant amounts. The toxin is concentrated in certain parts of the fish, such as the liver, ovaries, and skin.

On Monday (July 29, 2024), two children in Barangay Balas, Lamitan City lost their lives after consuming puffer fish. The young victims experienced severe symptoms from their dinner.

The family had enjoyed fried puffer fish for their evening meal. However, by the next day, they began feeling unwell, experiencing dizziness and vomiting. The four-year-old and seven-year-old boys did not survive and died at home after experiencing severe symptoms from their dinner.

Their mother and two other siblings, aged nine and two, were taken to the hospital for treatment. Thankfully, they are now recovering.

According to local authorities, the family was familiar with eating puffer fish, but it seems that something went wrong this time. The barangay chairman mentioned that the fish might not have been prepared or cooked properly, which could have caused the poisoning.

As part of the ongoing investigation, a sample of the puffer fish has been sent to the Provincial Forensic Unit for testing. This toxicology examination aims to determine what caused the deadly reaction and to prevent future incidents.
