Authorities Arrest Man for Extorting Money From Woman He Met at Bar Threatening to Spread Their Private Videos
A man was arrested in Cebu City for allegedly blackmailing a woman he met at a bar by threatening to spread private videos of her unless she paid him money.
According to the police, the suspect and the victim met at a bar and soon began an intimate relationship. During their relationship, they had video calls, some of which included sexual activities. The victim was unaware that the suspect was recording these calls.
Police Lieutenant Wallen Arancillo, spokesperson of the PNP-ACG, explained that the two have video calls that the victim did not know were being recorded by the suspect. These video calls included their intimate moments.
“And during their relationship, nagkaroon sila ng video calls na lingid sa kaalaman ng victim ay nire-record pala ito ng suspect. Ito po ‘yung video calls nila na may mga sexual activities or mga intimate moments nila,” Arancillo said.
The suspect allegedly threatened to send these intimate videos to the victim’s husband if she did not pay him money. Initially, he demanded amounts of P200 or P300, but his demands became more frequent over time.
“Doon nagumpisa ‘yung pagba-blockmail. Hanggang sinend niya nga doon sa kapamilya ng victim. Kaya nag-decide na ‘yung victim na mag-report,” said Arancillo.
The suspect did not provide a statement and is now facing charges of violating Republic Act 9262 (VAWC law), Republic Act 9995 (Anti-Photo and Video Voyeurism Act of 2009), and Article 294 (robbery with intimidation of a person) of the Revised Penal Code.
The latest data from the PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group reveals that sextortion is the most commonly reported case. From January to June this year, there were 198 cases of sextortion, up from 181 cases in the previous year.
