Police Arrests Habal-Habal Rider for Allegedly Harassing Female Shopkeeper
The police authorities arrested a habal-habal rider after allegedly harassing a shopkeeper in Cebu City.
A habal-habal rider refers to a motorcycle taxi or motorbike-for-hire operator commonly found in the Philippines, particularly in rural areas and smaller towns where public transportation options may be limited.
These riders offer transportation services to passengers, often operating informally without licenses or formal registration. The term “habal-habal” originates from the local Visayan dialect, where “habal” means to hold onto or cling, reflecting how passengers typically hold onto the back of the motorcycle during the ride.
Recently, a habal-habal rider was arrested for making an inappropriate joke towards a female shopkeeper. He asked if he could buy her instead of the food she was selling. Eventually, the latter claimed that it was intended as a joke.
While the victim chose not to comment on the incident, she is reportedly determined to press charges against the suspect under the Safe Spaces Act. The case drew attention to the importance of being mindful of our words, especially when addressing people we don’t know well.
Cebu City Police DCDO Police Lieutenant Colonel Janette Rafter reminded the public to be mindful of our words, especially to strangers.
“Let us be careful of our comments, especially kung ang pagsasabihan natin ng comment ay hindi natin kilala at hindi natin alam kung ano ang kaniyang pinagdaanan at kung sino ang taong ito,” Rafter said.
