Sen. Sonny Angara Speaks on Calls for Raise of Teachers’ Salary

SONNY ANGARA – The incoming DepEd Secretary expressed his full support in the push to increase the salary of teachers.

A few weeks ago, countless people were surprised when Vice President Sara Duterte resigned from being the secretary of the Department of Education. She also left her post as the vice chairperson of the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict.

Vice Pres. Duterte did not disclose the reason behind her resignation from being the DepEd Secretary. The public was even more surprised when she announced that 3 Dutertes will run for senator in 2025.

Senator Sonny Angara was named by the Palace as the new secretary of the Department of Education. Recently, he spoke his side about the push for the increase on the salary of the teachers in the country.

Based on a recent report on GMA News, Sen. Sonny Angara expressed his support on the call to increase the salaries of the teachers. According to him, he knows that having inspired teachers can affect the quality of education in the country.

“You attract the best, ‘yung pinakamagagaling, the best and the brightest ika nga,” he said.

With regards to the proposal to increase the entry-level salary of the public school teachers in the Philippines to Php 50,000, the Senator and incoming DepEd Secretary vowed that he will study it.

Angara clarified that it is the Congress that sets the salary when there is a raise in the wage of the government employees. According to the Senator, he would study the call to raise the entry-level salary of teachers in coordination with the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) and the Department of Finance (DOF).

Aside from the push for teachers’ salary increase, based on the report, Sen. Sonny Angara also supports the proposal for gadget ban in the Philippines. He stressed that it is better if the students are not distracted inside the classroom.

Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian filed the Senate Bill 2706 or the proposed Electronic Gadget-Free Schools Act which prohibits teachers and students from kindergarten to senior high school level public schools in the country to use gadgets during class hours.
