Antique Farmer Discovers Giant Singkamas
GIANT TURNIP – A farmer who discovered a giant turnip in a small town in Antique elicits comments online.
The turnip is a root vegetable commonly grown in temperate climates around the world for its white, bulbous taproot. It is a member of the Brassicaceae family, which also includes vegetables like cabbage, broccoli, and kale.
Turnips locally known as ‘singkamas’ are known for their versatility in cooking and their nutritional benefits. It is not only delicious but also packed with essential vitamins and minerals.

Recently, Benjie Jr Garmino Sarmiento, a Facebook user, shared photos of Tito Roger, a farmer from Casit-an, Laua-an, proudly holding the enormous singkamas. The photos quickly went viral and garnered various reactions from netizens.
In the photos, Tito Roger can be seen struggling to lift the giant singkamas, which appear larger than a ball. The impressive root vegetable weighs almost 10 kilograms, making it a remarkable find for the farmer.
The town of Laua-an in Antique is known for being the top producer of jicama or turnip. The town has a dedicated group of farmers who cultivate this nutritious vegetable.
The Singkamas Vendors Association in Laua-an has 32 members, and their stalls are located along the national highway in Barangay Guisijan.
While there are no specific records about the average size and weight of singkamas, this particular discovery stands out as an extraordinary example of what the region can produce.
