BOC Confiscates Parcel Containing Scorpions at NAIA
SUSPICIOUS PARCEL – BOC was able to intercept and confiscate a parcel containing scorpions and isopods at NAIA.
The illegal trade of wildlife is a serious problem that threatens the survival of many species and harms ecosystems around the world. From exotic pets to traditional medicines, wildlife products are in high demand, leading to illegal hunting, trapping, and smuggling of animals.
It involves the illegal capture, transportation, and sale of animals and their products. This includes live animals, parts, and derivatives, such as ivory, skins, and exotic pets. Poaching and habitat destruction disrupt ecosystems, leading to imbalances that can harm other wildlife and affect human livelihoods.
The illegal wildlife trade is driven by demand for these items in various industries, including traditional medicine, fashion, and exotic pet trade. It is considered as a crime, which has corresponding sanctions and penalties.
Last Tuesday (May 14, 2024), the Bureau of Customs (BOC) intercepted a parcel containing exotic pets such as scorpions and isopods destined for Mexico at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport. The post elicited reactions from the online community.
The package, declared as a “traditional designed shoulder bag,” was sent from Quezon City. Upon inspection, authorities found the parcel containing 23 large scorpions, 13 small scorpions, and a container of isopods.
The parcel has been turned over to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources for proper handling and care. This ensures that the animals are properly taken care of and do not pose a threat to the environment or public safety.
The interception of this parcel shows the importance of monitoring and regulating the transportation of live animals. By working together with relevant authorities, the illegal trade of wildlife can be prevented and protect both animals and humans from potential harm.
