Young Student Ends Own Life After Receiving Line of 6 Grades From Teacher
A 16-year-old student from Maasin, Iloilo, ended his life after being given a line of 6 grades by his teacher.
The young student, identified as Joemarie Castor or Alyas Toto, a Grade 10 student at Siwalo National High School, was disheartened by the low grades given to him by his teacher, leading him into depression.
According to his mom, Maricar, Joemarie returned home visibly upset, his face showed overwhelming sadness. The young 16-year-old student’s inability to meet the academic standards set by his teacher adds to his distress.
Toto felt he was unable to keep up with the demands of his education with grades as low as 64 in the first quarter, 69 in the second quarter, and 66 in the third quarter for the subject of Home Economics and Livelihood Education.
The student struggled to fulfill the teacher’s assignment of a cooking project due to financial constraints. The educator insisted on the completion of the project but Toto’s family’s struggle to afford the ingredients resulted in his failure to comply.
The young learner left a heartbreaking note stating his inability to continue schooling due to the overwhelming pressure and the feeling of being unable to meet his teacher’s requirements.
“Ma indi don ako magskwela kay indi don ako ka agent kay ma’am , subra project na indi ko kasarang ma sorry gid,” he wrote.
(Ma, I can’t go to school because I can’t handle it anymore. Ma’am Laura’s projects are too much, I’m really sorry)
Eventually, Toto’s lifeless body was discovered hanging from a tree near a well, showing the negative impact of academic stress and the importance of supporting students’ mental health.
The incident emphasizes the need for greater awareness and support for students struggling with academic pressures and mental health issues.
