This is the reaction of the grandfather of Deniece Cornejo over her conviction.
Convicted personality Deniece Cornejo is sentenced for life imprisonment and her grandfather has this reaction about this.
The guilty verdict for Deniece Cornejo and Cedric Lee came after a 10-year legal case battle following the violent altercation at Cornejo’s condominium unit in January 2014.
Deniece and Cedric were found guilty along with two others such as Ferdinand Guerrero and Simeon Palma Raz for the assault and extortion of Vhong Navarro in 2014. They have been sentenced to a reclusion perpetua based on a 94-page ruling by Judge Mariam Biem of Taguig Regional Trial Court Branch 153.
They were found guilty beyond reasonable doubt for serious illegal detention for ransom under Article 267 of the Revised Penal Code.
Cedric surrendered to the authorities voluntarily while Cornejo and Raz were already imprisoned in Muntinlupa as per Bureau of Corrections (BuCor). Raz is at the Reception and Diagnostic Center of the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City while Cornejo was put in the Correctional Institution for Women in Mandaluyong City.
About the life imprisonment sentence
Rod Cornejo, the grandfather of Deniece, is a former executive of the GMA network and currently the vice president of the Prison Fellowship International Pilipinas, reacted to this.
According to him, they went to the RTC Branch 153 in Bicutan and not knowing that they would leave without her as she was sent straight to the correctional institution. But they remained hopeful in this case.
He said, “I feel confident that they will be judged not guilty kasi ten years ago, they were given a bail and that means, may basehan. Kaya lang, iba ang pananaw ng judge sa RTC so it was shocking talaga.”
About Deniece’s possible current situation, it is saddening for him to imagine her situation like wearing the orange-colored uniform while sleeping on the floor. It makes him feel sad to think that this is going to be her life for the next days, months, or even years.
As someone who is a part of a prison ministry, he felt a bit ironic but still in pain. He believes life imprisonment for his grandniece was a bit harsh.
He added, “She’s very strong. She’s composed. She still has that strong faith that it will work out. But ito lang ang masasabi ko, I think what Cedric’s camp did to Vhong Navarro was not good. He took the law in his own hands. It’s regrettable na nangyari yan, but I still believe na Vhong abused Deniece.”
