A 36-year-old man lost his life after being punched by a barangay tanod from Barangay Patiao in Peñarrubia, Abra.
The incident started when the intoxicated victim reportedly challenged a group of men to a fistfight in front of a local store. The tanod allegedly struck the victim in self-defense, fearing that he would be harmed if he did not hit first, according to PCPT. June Saliw-an, Chief of the Peñarrubia Police Station
“Adda daytoy maysa a tanod tayo, daytoy suspek a mang-pacify koma kenkuana, instead nga agsardeng daytoy biktima. Akmaena a mapan danugen daytoy suspek, daytoy met suspek saanna kayat a maunaan,” Saliw-an said.
(This is one of our barangay tanods, this suspect was supposed to pacify him, but instead, he punched the victim first. It’s appropriate to hold this suspect accountable, this suspect didn’t want to be the first to throw a punch.)
The barangay chairman Dondie Baker who witnessed the intense altercation said that the victim seemed unaware and nonresponsive, leading to the altercation initiated by the suspect, who appeared to be attempting to subdue him.
The eyewitness immediately intervened and rushed the victim to the hospital. However, despite efforts to save him, the victim succumbed to his injuries, which included facial wounds and neck bruises.
