Dog Allegedly Abandoned, Clubbed by Barangay Tanod and Residents After Biting Children in Laguna

In San Pedro, Laguna, a barangay tanod and residents repeatedly struck an abandoned dog for biting at least four children.

The video captured the dog being forcibly pulled by two men, one of whom, dressed in a pink top, struck the animal repeatedly with what appeared to be a golf club. A 12-year-old boy who was one of the victims of the dog attack joined the beating.

“Nakita ko po pinsan ko na nagpapalipad ng saranggola. Nilapitan ko po hindi ko nakita ‘yung aso. Bigla na lang akong sinakmal, Napahiga ako. Kung hindi ko naiwas ang ibang kagat niya meron din siguro akong kagat sa mukha,” the boy said.

The boy’s mom mother raised concerns about the cost of treating the dog bite while apologizing for her son’s actions.

Bata naman po iyan. Hindi niya alam ang ginawa niya pero alam kong mali yun kaya humingi ako ng tawad. May alaga din po kaming aso. Hindi po kami salbahe sa hayop,” she said.

The family’s financial struggles with medical expenses. A private clinic was asking for P5,000 for his first vaccine. The family don’t have money and the kid’s father was just discharged from the hospital. They don’t even have cash for food.

Barangay officials backed up for their colleague, saying that the dog’s owners had abandoned it and that they were carrying out a rescue when the incident happened.

Animal rights organization Biyaya Animal Care took control of the dog and named it “Justice.” They also supplied free anti-rabies injections to the children who were impacted by the incident and promised to prosecute the people responsible for the dog’s abuse.

Citing Republic Act 8485, which prohibits cruelty to animals, Rina Ortiz of Biyaya Animal Care emphasized the importance of animal welfare.

“We are lacking in education on how to take care of animals. Ibig sabihin, when you were older or younger ang alam natin na kakapanganak lang nyan huwag nating lapitan,” Ortiz said.
