Military Personnel No Longer Allowed To Use TikTok, AFP Says
The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has issued a directive prohibiting military personnel from using TikTok.
AFP spokesperson Colonel Francel Margareth Padilla explained that the decision to ban TikTok usage among military personnel stems from cybersecurity concerns. The app’s Chinese ownership and rumors of its capacity to access users’ personal data and activities have raised concerns that it could be used for espionage.
Colonel Padilla emphasized the cybersecurity risks of TikTok use, citing research from the United States. According to her, the software may track users’ activity on their phones because it requires rights to access capabilities such as the microphone and camera.
The ban on TikTok use by military personnel indicates greater national security issues. The National Security Council has already addressed the problem, causing the AFP to take steps to limit any threats related to the app.
While the TikTok ban may be fresh to the public, Colonel Padilla stressed that it has been in place for some time within the military. However, the directive has not been publicly known until recently.
“Not just TikTok, but the free apps that we have in our gadgets, they have the capability to turn on our microphones, to look at us and watch us while we sleep and turn on our cameras, you know, access our SMS, send messages to our contacts because we gave them permission when we downloaded these applications,” Padilla said.
Despite the focus on security concerns, President Marcos urged military personnel to also embrace their role as peacemakers. He emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability while addressing threats to national security.
