Fake Lawyer Arrested After Scamming Victim of Over P500k
A fake lawyer in Pasay City was arrested for offering legal services and scamming his victim of over P500,000.
Last Saturday (January 20, 2024), a man was arrested for pretending to be a lawyer and scamming unsuspecting victims. The arrest took place in Pasay City after the fake lawyer’s deception was exposed.
According to the victim from Binangonan, Rizal, he was recommended to the imposter by an acquaintance for a legal case. The victim shared that the fake lawyer, who presented himself as Atty. Robert SP Garcia, appeared legitimate, creating affidavits and filing cases on their behalf.
The victim even mentioned that the imposter showed them an Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) ID, adding to their belief in his legitimacy.
“Ang dami po niyang alam sa batas e. Siya po gumawa ng affidavit namin, nag-file ng case namin sa prosecutor’s office. Nagpakita pa po siya ng IBP ID samin so talagang legit siya sa paningin namin,” the victim said.
However, the victim soon realized the scam when the fake lawyer requested large sums of money, totaling over half a million pesos, for various fees related to the legal proceedings. The victim, unfamiliar with legal processes, paid the amounts without realizing the fraud.
The scam occurred in December when the fake lawyer asked for a Christmas gift amounting to P60,000. It raised suspicions, leading the victim to investigate the imposter’s credentials. It was discovered that the scammer was using the name of a licensed lawyer from Bataan, leading to the victim’s realization that they had been deceived.
The victim sought the help of the police to apprehend the imposter. A meeting was arranged at a Pasay coffee shop to hand over the balance of the second appearance fee. The police authorities assisted the victim and successfully arrested the suspect when he demanded an additional P50,000.
The suspect, identified as Robert P. Garcia, denied claiming to be a lawyer, stating that he was only a consultant. He admitted to studying law but confessed that he did not pass the Bar examination.
