EARTHQUAKE: 6.7 Magnitude Quake Jolts Davao Occidental

Phivolcs Releases Bulletin about the Earthquake Today in Davao Occidental, January 9, 2024

EARTHQUAKE – The Phivolcs recorded a 6.7 magnitude quake in Davao Occidental today, Tuesday, January 9, 2024.

Following the 5.1 magnitude earthquake in Surigao del Sur a few days ago, another significant quake was recently recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) in another province. According to the agency, the quake that hit Davao Occidental today had a magnitude of 6.7.

The earthquake today that struck Davao Occidental, Tuesday, January 9, 2023, at 04:48 a.m., was tectonic in origin.

According to Phivolcs, the earthquake that hit a part of Davao Occidental was located at 04.15°North, 126.49°East – 183 km South 40° East of Balut Island in the Municipality of Sarangani. It had a depth of focus of 094 kilometers.

Phivolcs stated in its bulletin that damages are not expected from the said quake as well as aftershocks. According to the quake-recording agency, the following intensities were recorded in these areas:

    • Isulan, Sultan Kudarat

    • Tampakan, Tantangan, Banga, Norala, Santo Niño, Surallah, and Lake Sebu,

    • Zamboanga City
    • Maitum, Sarangani
    • Kidapawan City, Makilala, M’lang, Pigcawayan, Tulunan, and Kabacan, Cotabato
    • President Quirino, Sultan Kudarat
  • Intensity III
    • General Santos City
    • Koronadal City, Tupi, Polomolok, and T’boli, South Cotabato
    • Alabel, and Malapatan, Sarangani
    • Matalam, Cotabato
  • Intensity IV
    • Glan, Malungon, and Kiamba, Sarangani
